Send In the Clowns

Do you ever look at your animals and wonder what they would do for a job if they were people? I mean, there are the obvious dogs, like Holly.  Take one look at her and think, she would have been an amazing police officer.  Or maybe an extreme athlete.  She has a high drive and focus.  Whatever she would have been she’d have been the best at it.  And then there’s our cat, Kitty Bits.  If being a princess could be a job she would be it.  Either that or a great correctional officer because she doesn’t take any s#!% from the dogs in her house, and keeps everyone in line.  I know that’s kind of both ends of the spectrum, but that’s a cat for you. Then there’s Heidi.  When we first got her some friends who also have a Mal told us that this breed of dog is so...

Merry Christmas! (that’s what everybody’s saying right now)

Merry Christmas! (that’s what everybody’s saying right now)

Hi everybody! Heidi here.  Mom’s busy getting things ready for Christmas Eve, so I thought I would do my own update on what’s been happening this week.  Plus, I just got in trouble for chewing up another door mat.  I like to lay by the backdoor and gaze through the slider at Big Dog (her name is Holly but I like to call her Big Dog because she’s so big and cool!) and chew on the Christmas door mat.  It’s the second one I’ve chewed up, but I can’t help it.  They have all the flavors of people’s shoes wiped off on it and they taste simply delicious. Anyhow, I don’t really know what Christmas is about, but we have an actual tree in our house! How crazy is that? And it doesn’t look like the ones I saw when I was wandering around in the wild.  This one has brightly...

I Love Baby Steps

I Love Baby Steps

So, if you’ve been following this blog you’ve learned from the last several posts that having a rescue dog is not always easy.  It is, however, very rewarding.  I still remember how truly terrified Heidi’s eyes were when she met us.  She cowered in the back of her crate probably sad that she had changed hands once again, and wondering why this was happening to her again.  It just about breaks my heart to wonder what was going through that sweet head.  Fortunately, today, a little over a month later she’s such a different dog and I know it’s because she has once again taken the chance to trust humans and found that not all of us are bad.  Heck, some of us even let you get up on the bed and snuggle a bit.  I know, Mom, I said I’d never let another dog on the bed. ...

What We’re Learning

What We’re Learning

When Troy and I decided to go down this path all we really brought to the table was heart.  Sure, he did a bang-up job of training Holly into the amazing dog that she is today.  But that was so completely different.  Holly was an eight-week-old puppy when we got her.  All she had known was good stuff, and when she came to us the good stuff just kept on getting better.  She was a blank slate ready to learn things the right way the first time.  There was nothing to un-train if you will.  And because of that neither of us really have experience with taking on a broken animal.  Heidi is teaching us so much.  In fact, we had a conversation over the weekend about how we think we’re learning way more from her than she’s learning from us.  But here are a few things that...

Creating Family Heirlooms

Creating Family Heirlooms

One of the most wonderful gifts I was commissioned to create for Christmas this year was by a wonderful client, whose name can’t be used in case her family members see this.  Now all of you are wondering if one of these will be showing up under your tree! This sweet girl asked me to design necklaces for all the women in her family, herself included, as a set.  She wanted to use vintage pieces, lots of sparkle and feature blue and silver as the color palette.  Oh my gosh, how excited was I to tackle this one? Each of these pieces was created to reflect the woman who would be wearing it based on size and shape, but incorporate pieces that overlap into one another.  The thought being that if you set all of these necklaces up next to each other you’ll see they’re all...
