Life Characteristics Learned From Heidi

It is easy for me to get caught up into how we are helping Heidi on her journey of recovery.  What I have to remind myself is that I am learning so much more about her, myself and life through her.  The following are a list of characteristics that Heidi brings to the forefront of my life. Unconditional Love/Forgiveness Heidi has every reason not to trust people.  Over the course of these past few months we have picked up hints to how Heidi was abused and mistreated.  The obvious signs were giardia, weighing 34 pounds, scared senseless of everything and her right side teeth worn to almost nothing, which we attribute to her chewing her cage that she was locked up in.  We do not know the size of her cage, whether it was inside or outside but it was bad enough for...

How I See Heidi

Hi I’m Samantha.  I’m the youngest one in the family.  And today I’m going to talk about myself and Heidi.  I love, love, love Heidi and she’s a real fun dog to play with.  She also likes to go on walks.  And I end up getting to fetch the balls for her.  I love her very much, and I know she loves me very much.  And it’s so funny how she always wants to steal my dog.  His name is Doggie.  I’ve had Doggie all my life and I play with him a lot, and it just ends up with Heidi wanting to eat him.  She waits until I go to school, or she hops on my bed in the morning and she tries to eat Doggie.  It’s like a little toy shop for her in my room because there are so many toys.  It might feel like to her there are stacks of toys everywhere, and the best part is it’s free. ...

My Hero

Hey everybody! Heidi here! I know I wrote last week’s blog post, but I begged and begged Mom to let me do it.  Now, normally begging is not allowed in this house.  But since Mom said she needs to catch up on laundry and maybe transplant some bulbs (whatever that means) she decided to let me take over again. So, it’s been brought to my attention that people have heros.  Heroes are people we look up to who usually have awesome talents and skills that normal people don’t, and who often end up saving the day.  Like Indiana Jones, Captain America and Mr. Bates.  I’m not totally sure about that last one, but Mom really likes him.  She says he’s so wonderful.  Anyhow, you may not know this, but dogs have heroes, too.  Holly has a Rin Tin Tin collar that she doesn’t...

Happy Get Day, Heidi Herrera!

Hi everyone! Heidi here! Mom decided that Samantha’s playroom needs some deep cleaning (I think maybe she’s turning it into an official guest room? I don’t know what that means but I heard her say that as she was throwing things out the playroom door).  Since I don’t want any part of that I decided to help her out and write this week’s blog.  After all, as the newest official member of the Herrera pack I need to take on more responsibilities.  Yep, you read that right, people! I’m officially being adopted! I’m a Herrera! Heidi Herrera, thank you very much. Now, I know it probably sounds like I’m from Mexico now, but don’t be confused.  I’m just adopted.  My kind are still originally from Belgium, a lovely country known for straddling the cultural boundary...

Training Day

So, as I mentioned in an earlier post Heidi has her own  New Year’s resolutions that we have plans to attack.  Lucky for us we have a new, wonderful friend who is actually a dog trainer.  However, he’s beyond what I imagine a dog trainer to be.  He’s actually a person who studies dogs down to the minutest details that can reveal great information about the current state of a dog.  I’m talking down to how the dog is twitching their whiskers kind of detail.  I’ll explain why this is important in a moment. For the last two weeks Ash has come over to meet with Heidi and us.  Just to simplify how truly gifted he is at what he does I will say he had Heidi eating out of his hand the first evening he came over.  For those friends who have been to our home and met Heidi...

Holly Dog is in Da House!

Hey people.  Holly here.  Mom’s busy catching up now that Samantha is back in school, and Heidi is off spinning in a circle somewhere.  So, I’m doing the weekly update because I feel there is a perspective that’s been grossly overlooked.  Yep.  That would be mine.  You see, my life was pretty awesome before my people decided that they should take on a rescue dog.  Heck, while we’re being honest I’m just going to say it.  I think they should have stopped with me.  We didn’t need an extra human or a cat or chickens or ducks.  But hey, these crazy people just keep on bringing in more creatures.  They don’t even check with me first, so I think it’s time for me to weigh in on all of these antics. First things first.  I really love my people.  Even Samantha.  My dad is...

Heidi New Year!

The theme of the last week seems to be so much about resolutions.  People, who look at the beginning of a new year with expectation that flipping the calendar will give them inspiration to achieve what perhaps they might not have been able to achieve in the previous year.  To be honest, I’ve reached an age where I believe that we are who we are.  Rarely, does a resolution made at the beginning of the year change someone’s life.  If resolutions really work then why does it seem that so many people welcome the end of a year because of how it somehow didn’t meet their expectations only to face the upcoming year with plans galore for success? It’s a crazy end-of-the-year cycle, really.  Resolutions shmesolutions I say. However, I think I have a different approach to...
